Week One (March 30 - April 3): iPhone Photo Challenge!
This week, students will be encouraged to explore the possibilities of photography on an iPhone (or smartphone of any kind). If you do not have a phone with photo capabilities, perhaps you may have a digital cameral laying around the house? If so, that will do just fine!
The idea here is for you to think about how to take the the most interesting photo of something, and not just "point and shoot." Also, look for unique and unusual things to photograph. Try interesting viewpoints and perspectives. Look for interesting lighting. You can find a presentation on the elements of photography HERE and a link to another handout on photography tips at the bottom of this post.
I am going to provide several concepts for you to explore in this activity, but by no means should you feel limited to those concepts. Feel free to use these concepts or go in your own direction. This is meant to be fun and exploratory, it should not feel like a rigid exercise.
The first couple of concepts are in the more traditional vein of photography. You may select to take still life, portrait, nature, landscape, architectural, etc. photographs. It is important to do some research prior to going out and taking photographs. Artists do not live in a vacuum. We are the products of our collective experiences and visual inspiration. We learn and are inspired by one another's work. You are encouraged to complete an online search of professional examples of the type of photography that you are interested in taking. One really fantastic resource is the website for the Annual iPhone Photography Awards. There are 13 years worth of galleries worth of award winners on the site. Some examples are a bit exotic and would be difficult to accomplish, but try to focus on the compositions, lighting, etc. and not necessarily the subjects. Beauty can be found anywhere.

The alternate concept is something called a "Letter Stack." This is when you find different, interesting and unique examples of letters and typography around your home or around town (given that you can/should leave the house). Find as many different types as you can. Shoot them from interesting angles. Find different colors. Find flat examples and 3-dimensional examples. Be creative! If you have access to editing software, please feel free to stack your photos into words or names. If you do not have the editing app or software, that is OK too!
I would like to remind and encourage everyone to follow all CDC guidelines and safety precautions and social distancing recommendations if you are leaving the house for this activity and make sure that you have informed your parents/guardians that you are planning on doing so. Just be smart and safe, please!
When you have examples or photos that you would like to share, please post them on the Google Doc found here:

I will check back periodically and see how everyone is coming along!
**Please note, if you are creating Art during our time away from SHS, PLEASE SHARE on the Google Doc! You do not have to follow the weekly activity to participate! All that matters is that YOU CREATE!
The last, LAST thing: SAVE YOUR TOILET PAPER ROLLS! One of our next activities will use them as the primary medium! Very cool and fun stuff...
I know this is a new and challenging set of circumstances for us all, but hopefully this can provide some some entertainment and an enjoyable way to pass the time! I hope you are all well and I hope to see all of your faces again very soon!
