Hand Self-Portrait This project will highlight the use of hands as powerful symbols in art throughout history. The students will be asked to discuss how they feel that the pose of the hand and/or the color schemes of the work affect the mood and/or intent of the piece. Students are encouraged to make their work highly individualized to reflect their own identity, as this piece will be considered a self-portrait without the use of their faces. Students will be allowed to incorporate minimal elements into their work that reflect their personality. However, the majority of the background and space surrounding their hands should be a geometric or organic design.
In preparation for the Hand "Self Portrait" project, students will be expected to spend several days in class drawing their own hands from life in expressive gestures. Careful attention should be paid to form and proportion. Students will also block out shading on their hands and identify areas of shadow and light as they fall across the forms of their hands. Examples & handouts can be found to the right. The project rubric is attached at the bottom of the page. |
